Dr. Karegeannes completed his internship at the San Diego Naval Hospital. This was followed by three years as a Submarine and Diving Medical Officer in the Navy. He then returned to Duke for his Orthopedic Surgery Training followed by a Hip and Knee Replacement Fellowship at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
He specializes in hip and knee replacement surgery, as well as revision surgery for failed replacements. He performs more than 450 joint replacement surgeries per year. He was named one of the “Top Doctors” for Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, Money magazine, Special Report, “The Best Health Care in America”, in fall 2003. He reviews articles the Journal of Arthroplasty and cases for the North Carolina Medical Board. He is currently the chief of the Orthopedic service line at Mission HCA hospital in Asheville.
He is active in local and national joint replacement organizations to help ensure that patients in our region can access the latest treatment options. He does not accept consulting fees or other payments from joint implant manufacturers to ensure his recommendations for treatment are unbiased and place his patients’ interests first.
