James Borin, M.D.

Dr. James Borin, M.D., attended Yale University, where he was a first-team All-American in fencing and a member of the U.S. National Fencing Team. He continued his education at Yale Medical School, followed by a urology residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center and a fellowship in endourology and robotic surgery at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Borin previously served as Associate Professor of Urology and Director of Endourology at NYU Langone Health. Prior to that, he was Director of Robotic Surgery and Director of the Executive Health Program at the University of Maryland.

A recognized leader in minimally invasive urologic surgery, Dr. Borin helped pioneer surgical techniques for the treatment of kidney stones and has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters. He has taught numerous national and international courses on advanced endoscopic and robotic surgical techniques.

Dr. Borin’s clinical practice focuses on the minimally invasive management of kidney stones, kidney cancer, and complex ureteral reconstruction. He is also passionate about the role of nutrition and lifestyle in promoting long-term health and disease prevention. Reflecting this commitment, he recently became certified in Lifestyle Medicine by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine.

His interest in the field began after learning about urologists’ pioneering use of advanced technology to make procedures less invasive and more comfortable for patients. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship under a renowned urologist who was the first in the world to perform laparoscopic kidney removal and who developed many of the minimally invasive techniques used to treat kidney stones today.

Dr. Borin is committed to providing personalized care and believes that informed patients make the best decisions about their health. He takes the time to thoroughly discuss all available treatment options, working closely with each patient to develop an individualized care plan.

For many conditions, including small kidney tumors and kidney stones, observation may be an appropriate initial approach that can delay or even eliminate the need for surgery. When intervention is necessary, Dr. Borin specializes in minimally invasive procedures designed to relieve symptoms, prevent future complications, and promote faster recovery. Most of the surgeries he performs require little to no incision, allowing patients to return to their daily activities more quickly.
