Dr. J. Pieter Hommen, M.D., is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and fellowship-trained specialist in sports medicine and advanced arthroscopy of the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, and ankle. With over 20 years of experience since completing his training, he is a pioneer in hip arthroscopic surgery and continues to innovate techniques and implants in his clinical and research practice in orthopedics.
Dr. Hommen specializes in injuries and arthritis of the shoulder, hip, elbow, and knee, with particular interests in joint preservation, cartilage restoration, tendon and ligament repair, and restoration of joint biomechanics. His expertise encompasses a wide range of arthroscopic procedures, including shoulder, hip, knee, and elbow.
A dedicated educator, Dr. Hommen has served as a faculty instructor of arthroscopic surgery for orthopedic surgical residents and as an Associate Master Arthroscopy Instructor at the Orthopedic Learning Center in Rosemont, Chicago, for the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA). He has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at Florida International University since 2011 and continues to publish in peer-reviewed journals. His passion for innovation drives his commitment to advancing orthopedic care and helping patients return to active, pain-free lives.
Dr. Hommen is the co-founder of OrthoMiami alongside Dr. Cesar Ceballos. He has served as a team physician for prestigious organizations, including the New York Mets, WWF Wrestling, Alvin Ailey Dance, New York City Ballet, Miami City Ballet, Miami FC Soccer, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Major League Soccer Combine, FIFA Soccer Medical Official for World Cup Qualifiers, Cirque du Soleil, US Sailing, WBC heavyweight boxing, UFC, and Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. In the Miami area, he has served as the team physician for local high school teams (St. Brendan High School, Florida Christian High School, Doral Academy Charter School, Somerset Academy Charter School), the Miami Marathon, and college programs at Florida Memorial University and Florida National University.
Born in the Netherlands, Dr. Hommen moved to Pittsburgh where he attended Upper St. Clair High School. He earned his BA from Cornell University College of Arts and Sciences and his MD from Weill Cornell Medical College, graduating with Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society distinction. He completed his internship and residency at the prestigious Hospital for Joint Diseases (NYU Langone Orthopedic Residency) and his sports medicine fellowship at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute (now part of SCOI/UCLA).
Outside of medicine, Dr. Hommen was a four-year varsity swimmer and event record holder at Cornell University and was a multiple-year All-Time Academic All-Ivy Selection student athlete winner. He continues to swim as a U.S. Masters Swimmer. Dr. Hommen is a family man and a proud father of three daughters. He is married to Nicole Mendoza Hommen, a local Miami native with deep Miami roots and tradition.
