Ian McClain, M.D., is an ophthalmologist specializing in comprehensive eye care, cataract surgery, and the medical management of a broad range of ocular diseases. He earned his undergraduate degree in anthropology from the University of Colorado Boulder. He received his medical degree from the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. Dr. McClain completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and is dedicated to delivering personalized, patient-centered vision care.

Originally from Aspen, Colorado, Ian McClain, M.D., attended the University of Colorado Boulder, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology. During his undergraduate studies, he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and received the prestigious Jacob Van Ek Scholars Award, an honor recognizing students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and make meaningful contributions to the university and surrounding community through leadership, service, and volunteerism.
Dr. McClain went on to attend medical school at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine, where he developed a strong interest in ophthalmology through involvement in medical education and research focused on diabetic retinopathy. He also dedicated a research year to working with the Cure Blindness Project under the mentorship of renowned ophthalmologist Dr. Geoffrey Tabin. During this time, he helped provide ophthalmic care and supported teams performing thousands of cataract surgeries in Ethiopia, further strengthening his commitment to improving vision care worldwide. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where he trained at a major academic medical center caring for patients across Colorado and the surrounding region. His clinical interests include comprehensive ophthalmology, cataract surgery, and the medical management of a broad range of eye diseases.
Dr. McClain is committed to treating every aspect of the patient and believes that excellent eye care begins with understanding each individual’s needs and vision goals. He values building lasting relationships with patients and working together to achieve the best possible visual outcomes. Outside of medicine, Dr. McClain enjoys swimming, biking, and spending time with his wife, who is currently completing her pediatrics residency at the University of Colorado.
