Dr. Erik Herman is board-certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University School of Medicine and completed his residency at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, studying under the nationally renowned Myron LaBan, MD.
Prior to joining Kennedy-White Orthopaedic Center in 1999, Dr. Herman spent two years as Associate Medical Director of Bayfront Medical Center's rehabilitation units. He joined Kennedy-White to focus on his interest in outpatient physical medicine, treating musculoskeletal pain and weakness without surgery. Dr. Herman is proud to have been selected by Sarasota Magazine for their annual Top Doctors edition in 2015.
Dr. Herman regularly sees patients with pain in their neck, back, shoulders, hips, legs, knees, hands, or feet who want a conservative treatment plan to avoid having surgery. Depending on what’s needed, he may prescribe medication, physical therapy, a home exercise program, or he may perform a cortisone injection. He believes in working with the patient to design the best program to meet their needs and get them better as fast as possible.
Dr. Herman also performs injections in the office under the guidance of ultrasound. Several medical studies have shown that this significantly improves the accuracy of the needle placement, can reduce the pain of the injection, and can improve the results when “blind” injections have failed.
An expert in electromyography (a computerized test that can determine if there is a “pinched” nerve or muscle disease), Dr. Herman has performed these tests for over 20 years and offers practical, problem-focused, and "gentle" EMG services. His goal is to figure out the source of your problem, as the most accurate diagnosis leads to the most effective treatment.
Dr. Herman's interest in physical medicine and rehabilitation draws from his experience as a collegiate gymnast and his extensive computer background (he began programming professionally at the age of 15). In addition, he enjoys golfing, exercising, and spending time with his beautiful wife and three daughters.
