Dr. Eric M. Hoenicke is originally from Midland, Michigan, and earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan School of Medicine in Ann Arbor. He completed his general surgery residency at Pennsylvania State University at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania followed by a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship at Washington University at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. Dr. Hoenicke has practiced with Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons since 2009.

He specializes in adult cardiothoracic surgery and has strong interests in the surgical treatment of heart failure including cardiac transplantation, ventricular assist devices, Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO), and complex coronary artery and valve surgery for patients with cardiomyopathies. Additional surgical interests include atrial fibrillation surgery, surgical left atrial appendage management, minimally-invasive complex mitral valve repair, minimally-invasive aortic valve replacement, off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery, robotic-assisted minimally invasive coronary artery bypass surgery, total arterial revascularization for coronary artery disease, and minimally-invasive robotic thoracic surgery.
Dr. Hoenicke pioneered the development of a minimally invasive robotic surgery program where he became the first surgeon in Austin to perform robotic thoracic and robotic cardiac surgical procedures. He continues to educate and train cardiothoracic surgeons nationally in the field of robotic surgery and program development.
He has published extensively in the field of cardiothoracic surgery and has received many awards and accolades at international meetings where his surgical experience within Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons has been presented. Dr. Hoenicke has remained academically active in Central Texas by providing multiple lectures locally, which includes The University of Texas. He maintains involvement with multiple clinical research trials within Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeons including PERIGON, EXCEL, and PERCEVAL.
Dr. Hoenicke is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation, William S. Pierce Surgical Society, International Society for Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery, Texas Medical Association, and Travis County Medical Society. He was recently listed as a top cardiothoracic surgeon in Austin Monthly’s 2013 list of Top Doctors based on peer endorsements, experience, education, training, research, publishing, and awards.
