Dr. Eric Bernstein is Board-Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has been in practice since 1999 treating patients of all ages, from newborns to older adults. He completed his residency training in Family Medicine at the renowned RUSH-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. Dr. Eric Bernstein is the founding physician and Medical Director of San Antonio Family Physicians. He is Board-Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and has been in practice since 1999 treating patients of all ages, from newborns to older adults. He is also an Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio. Dr. Bernstein graduated from The University of Southern California (1990) and The Chicago Medical School (1996), where he earned his Doctor of Medicine Degree and also earned a Master of Science Degree in Applied Physiology. He then completed his residency training in Family Medicine at the renowned RUSH-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He has a subspecialty in OB/GYN and continues to offer GYN services at San Antonio Family Physicians. He also has a subspecialty in Allergy and Immunology and has pioneered the use of Allergy Drops (Sublingual Immunotherapy) in South Texas with great success. Dr. Bernstein is also fluent in Spanish.
Dr. Bernstein previously practiced medicine in Chicago, Illinois, where he served as Medical Director of The Family Health Center of Wicker Park and Medical Director of Centro Medico Michael Reese Hospital.
Dr. Bernstein always encourages two-way communication between doctors and patients. He believes this is critical in providing exceptional medical care. Whether discussing healthy life choices or treating an illness, Dr. Bernstein believes that he and the patient are a team, both involved in creating and implementing a successful plan. He prides himself on providing clinical excellence for complete patient satisfaction and appreciates patient feedback. Patients regularly comment on Dr. Bernstein’s approachable style, compassion, and ability to relay complicated medical information clearly.
Dr. Bernstein was a volunteer member of Chicago’s South Suburban Emergency Response Team (SSERT) where he participated for eight years as a SWAT team physician. He maintains a special interest in training medical, law enforcement and first responders in Medical Counterterrorism, Weapons of Mass Destruction, and Less Lethal Munitions.
Dr. Bernstein grew up in Great Neck, New York. He enjoys living in San Antonio with his wife, Sue, and their three young children.
Always striving to provide his patients with the latest and most effective treatments, Dr. Bernstein is constantly looking to incorporate the use of technological advancements to improve patient communication and care. He believes technology to be an effective resource inpatient care.
Dr. Bernstein is looking to provide an all-inclusive medical home for every patient, going above and beyond the limitations of primary care. He stresses the importance of a “patient-centered medical home,” and believes patient care should not be limited to primary care, but include all aspects of the patient’s health and treatment. San Antonio Family Physicians provides patients with the maximum care available within one central office.

Dr. Bernstein is great. His staff is great too. He called me at home in the afternoon to tell me about a dangerous blood test reading I had and arranged for me to get a prescription that day. The labs are taken at his office so no need to go to a different facility. He refers me for annual tests at providers near my home which I appreciate. There's easy access to his office and plenty of parking. No long wait times either. Follow up visits can be done via video which I also appreciate.

Great visit for 1st time meeting MD. I’m a bit disappointed at some of the questions asked about my care from another physician but can understand his concern. I just felt he assumed something before knowing the complete circumstances.Nothing serious or I would have spoke up.now having said. This I felt he took a lot more time to get to know my husband & myself. Was careful in finding out what meds we took & why. Just a really good MD for us at this time. Don’t hesitate to receive care from him or the NP’s or PA’s really great care..
