Dr. Eric Benson first became interested in orthopedics as a young athlete. “When I was 12 years old, I was a baseball pitcher. I was probably throwing too much and I went to see an orthopedic surgeon. That was my first experience with orthopedics. When I got to college I made the decision to pursue it.”
When it came time to deciding on a subspecialty, Dr. Benson chose adult reconstruction – hip and knee replacements – rather than sports medicine.
“What drew me to adult reconstruction was that the older patients, typically over 50, seemed to have more perspective on life. And to me they were the most fun patients to take care of. The procedures are very rewarding with a high likelihood of success.”
Dr. Benson is most proud of the fact that he has been in practice in the same community for over 20 years and has done over 12,000 total hip and knee replacements since 1999.
“I’m now seeing the children of the people I treated 20 years ago and did hip and knee replacement on. They’re coming in for surgery themselves. It is really rewarding to get to know families through multiple generations.”

Dr. Benson graduated from The College of the Holy Cross, Summa Cum Laude before attending medical school at the University of Massachusetts. He interned at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Hartford Hospital and Saint Frances Hospital. He did his residency at the University of Connecticut Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, Saint Frances Hospital, Newington Children’s Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. His fellowship was in adult reconstruction at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Benson is a great doctor and surgeon. He performed my full knee replacement in 2023 and I cannot thank him enough for his skill and his great personality. Highly recommended by me.

Dr. Benson is a great doctor. He takes his time with you and will answer any and all questions you may have. I made a comment to him about an MRI that I need done but have not heard from them and it's been almost 2 weeks since the order went in. I even called them. I no sooner left his office and I received a call to schedule my MRI's. He did a complete knee replacement 12 years ago and I have not had any problems with it. I have full rotation of my knee with out Physical Therapy.
Highly qualified orthopedic surgeon who has done 3 joint replacements on me. Hie has great people skills and you can tell he really cares about his patients!
He did the surgery on my right knee in 2019 and he did a great job. Soon he will be doing my left knee and I know that it will go as well as the right one. Every time I have an appt with him he is very polite, patient and very knowledgeable.
