Dr. Eric Benson first became interested in orthopedics as a young athlete. “When I was 12 years old, I was a baseball pitcher. I was probably throwing too much and I went to see an orthopedic surgeon. That was my first experience with orthopedics. When I got to college I made the decision to pursue it.”
When it came time to deciding on a subspecialty, Dr. Benson chose adult reconstruction – hip and knee replacements – rather than sports medicine.
“What drew me to adult reconstruction was that the older patients, typically over 50, seemed to have more perspective on life. And to me they were the most fun patients to take care of. The procedures are very rewarding with a high likelihood of success.”
Dr. Benson is most proud of the fact that he has been in practice in the same community for over 20 years and has done over 12,000 total hip and knee replacements since 1999.
“I’m now seeing the children of the people I treated 20 years ago and did hip and knee replacement on. They’re coming in for surgery themselves. It is really rewarding to get to know families through multiple generations.”

Dr. Benson graduated from The College of the Holy Cross, Summa Cum Laude before attending medical school at the University of Massachusetts. He interned at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Hartford Hospital and Saint Frances Hospital. He did his residency at the University of Connecticut Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, Saint Frances Hospital, Newington Children’s Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. His fellowship was in adult reconstruction at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

I have been seeing Dr Benson since 2016 regarding my hips. He replaced both hips and I have been very pleased with everything. I would highly recommend him.
Eric Benson was friendly and took time to listen my concerns.He explained me in details everything about the preparation period for the knee replacement surgery and surgery itself. I am looking forward to the upcoming surgery with the big optimism and hope for the good result.
2 years post up and I can still do everything I need to do, with no pain! Super professional. Right on point. Easy to schedule.

I will preface this comment by saying I am spoiled from living in the Boston area, and my initial and default decision is to go to one of the leading Boston hospitals. Instead, I chose to have my TKR done by Eric Benson based largely on the rave reviews from former patients. Here's my review: I could not be more pleased with my experience with the Benson team. Kind, patient, attentive, professional and thoroughly expert in their field. I am 2 weeks post-op, and largely back on my feet. My pain was (is) quite manageable. The communication from the office was perfect. All in all, this MGH snob could not be more pleased!
I had my appointment in Londonderry. Dr.Benson takes the time to listen and answer all of my questions in ways that I could understand. Also, my appointment with him was in a timely fashion that I appreciated.
