Dr. Eric Benson first became interested in orthopedics as a young athlete. “When I was 12 years old, I was a baseball pitcher. I was probably throwing too much and I went to see an orthopedic surgeon. That was my first experience with orthopedics. When I got to college I made the decision to pursue it.”
When it came time to deciding on a subspecialty, Dr. Benson chose adult reconstruction – hip and knee replacements – rather than sports medicine.
“What drew me to adult reconstruction was that the older patients, typically over 50, seemed to have more perspective on life. And to me they were the most fun patients to take care of. The procedures are very rewarding with a high likelihood of success.”
Dr. Benson is most proud of the fact that he has been in practice in the same community for over 20 years and has done over 12,000 total hip and knee replacements since 1999.
“I’m now seeing the children of the people I treated 20 years ago and did hip and knee replacement on. They’re coming in for surgery themselves. It is really rewarding to get to know families through multiple generations.”

Dr. Benson graduated from The College of the Holy Cross, Summa Cum Laude before attending medical school at the University of Massachusetts. He interned at the University of Connecticut Health Center, Hartford Hospital and Saint Frances Hospital. He did his residency at the University of Connecticut Medical Center, Hartford Hospital, Saint Frances Hospital, Newington Children’s Hospital and Connecticut Children’s Medical Center. His fellowship was in adult reconstruction at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

Dr. Benson is all about his patients. He is a true professional as a physician but genuinely concerned about his patients. When he asks how we are feeling it is due to his concern. I find him so easy to relate to but down to earth at the same time. He is a tribute to his profession and I feel blessed to have such a caring person as my physician.

3 weeks after a TKR and I couldn't be more pleased. Have already scheduled the other knee. Dr Benson is the best!!! From knee injections to knee replacement, he was spot on with recommendations and skill level. His staff is also great and communication is fast.
I am so pleased with the results of my hip replacement with Dr Benson. I had minimal post op discomfort, started back to work in 3 weeks, and now after 5 weeks I no longer need my cane. I am so grateful to not be limping and to have my activities back. Life renewed!
