He earned his doctorate from the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. His internal medicine internship and residency were completed at Keesler Medical Center at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. He completed a fellowship in cardiology in San Antonio, Texas at Wilford Hall Medical Center and Brooke Army Medical Center.

Dr. Purvis previously worked as the chief of non-invasive cardiology at Keesler Medical Center. He was an instructor in medicine for five years at F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. He also practiced in Panama City, Florida at Tyndall AFB Hospital as an internal medicine physician.
He served as a major commissioned officer of the U.S. Air Force for 14 years. He was awarded a commendation medal in 1997 by Tyndall Air Force Base.
