Dr. Collins uses sports ultrasound imaging and radiology to help assess and treat the underlying diagnosis in patients. He has experience with athletes of every age and level of competition, from Olympic athletes and Division I college athletes to professionals.
Dr. Collins grew up in Gilbert, AZ, with a passion for sports, particularly hockey. This passion culminated in the Tampa Bay Lightning choosing him in the 5th round (163rd overall) of the 2004 National Hockey League draft, earning him the distinction of being the 1st Arizona native drafted into the NHL. Dr. Collins’ hockey career took off in 2002 when he was part of the gold medal-winning United States National Team Development Program. He then attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, MI, where he played Division I College hockey for four years. After college, he played five seasons of professional hockey across the AHL, ECHL, and CHL.
In 2014, he enrolled at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in Lansing, MI, to earn his Doctor of Medicine degree. After completing his medical residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, he moved to Columbus, OH, where he completed his Sports Medicine Fellowship at The Ohio State University.
While at The Ohio State University, Dr. Collins served as an Associate Physician, where he had the opportunity to care for and manage medical illnesses and orthopedic injuries for NCAA Division I athletics, including; Men’s Football, Men’s & Women’s Ice Hockey, Women’s Field Hockey, Men’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Soccer, Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse, Men’s and Women’s Track and Field, Men’s and Women’s Gymnastics, Men’s Baseball, and Women’s Softball. Additionally, he has provided medical care for the Columbus Clippers – the AAA affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians (MLB), the 2022 USA Women’s Olympic Ice Hockey team, various Big Ten tournaments, and the 2023 NCAA Men’s Basketball March Madness Tournament.
In 2023 USA Hockey selected Dr. Collins to join their Safety and Protective Equipment Committee (SPEC). Members serve as consultants to USA Hockey on all safety, injuries, and protective equipment matters. They continually study the game at all age and competition levels to develop means and methods of keeping the sport of ice hockey as safe and injury-free as possible for its participants, including making recommendations for changes in the playing rules.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Collins enjoys spending time with his wife, Samantha, and two children. During winter, you can find him planning and building a backyard ice hockey rink and coaching hockey. He also enjoys traveling, reading, being outdoors on the lake, golfing, hunting, fishing, and being an active volunteer and member of his local church and community.
