Dr. Donald Holzer, M.D., was born and grew up in New York City and its environs. He graduated with honors from SUNY Stony Brook with a BA in psychology and went to medical school at Pennsylvania State, graduating summa cum laude in 1977. He then did an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Cornell, again in New York City. Afterwards, he started his neurology residency, also at Cornell, serving as chief resident, and finished in 1982.
After his neurology training, he went into neurology private practice in Patchogue, New York, developing in interest in pain medicine. He moved to Virginia in 2003, working with the Center for Pain Management, and in 2017 joined the team at the Center for Complex Pain Care. Dr. Holzer is affiliated with a number of organizations involved in pain care, including the American Pain Society, the International Association for the Study of Pain and the American Academy of Pain Management. He also serves on the editorial board of The Journal of the American Academy of Pain Management.
Outside of medicine, he is actively involved in his youngest daughter’s equestrian pursuits in the Hunter/Jumper circuit. He also enjoys his own non-competitive trail riding.
