Dr. Dinakar Murthi discovered that orthopaedic surgery was his calling during the third year of medical school, when he scrubbed into a case in which orthopaedic surgeons were reconstructing the femur of a woman who had sustained a fracture near a prior total hip replacement.
“The amazing recovery that the patient made, really helped me appreciate the power of science, biomechanics and the human touch in getting patients functioning and enjoying life again without pain.”
He has focused much of his work on relieving pain and restoring function.
“Spinal nerve pain is one of the most difficult and debilitating of symptoms for patients. It truly affects all aspects of their lives. So I’ve dedicated a large part of my life to helping people who are suffering from nerve compression causing pain, weakness, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs.”
Dr. Murthi chose to sub-specialize in spine surgery because it is a rapidly evolving field in which nerve pain can be alleviated with minimally invasive procedures.
“Procedures that used to require large incisions, long hospital stays and significant postoperative pain have now been transformed to outpatient procedures performed in surgical centers. With advances in imaging, surgical navigation and streamlined implants, we can achieve the surgical goals of decompressing the nerve roots to alleviate pain with much less trauma to the surrounding tissue.”
While minimally invasive surgery is powerful, Dr. Murthi believes that it should only be consider after all reasonable nonsurgical options have been exhausted.
“I think it is important to realize that the patient needs to be the focus of the attention and not the technology itself. I strive to cautiously evaluate each patient while listening to their complaints and symptoms. I realize that sometimes the most effective treatments are not necessarily surgical treatments.”

Dr. Murthi specializes in minimally invasive cervical and lumbar spinal surgery done on an outpatient basis. Dr. Murthi is trained in motion sparing surgery such as Cervical Disk Replacement using Mobi-C, which is the only implant that is approved by the FDA for 1 or 2 level surgery. Dr. Murthi graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. He graduated with honors from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, CT. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at Albany Medical Center Hospital, a Level I trauma center in Albany, NY. He completed his fellowship in spine surgery with neurosurgeons and orthopaedic spine surgeons at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, MA.

Professional,caring and great personality
Very thorough, and complimented my Primary Care Physician for her care.
Dr. Murthi was very thorough in explaining the results and showing me the results of my MRI. We discussed in detail my symptoms and the next course of action. I am extremely pleased with the outcome of my visit. He answered all of my questions. I would rate him more than 5 stars!!
The Doc is very thorough and spends time explaining options for your medical condition.He has a nice bedside manner as well.
Dr Murthi is so caring. He us not in a hurry as many other doctors are. He answers your question and gives you good advice on how to resolve your problems. He takes the necessary steps in an inexpedient way in setting up appointments. I have rotator cuff tears on each shoulder and he has helped me work through them. I think he really is top notch.
