After completing his residency program, he stayed on for an additional year as Chief Resident to develop his skills in health system management and then moved to New York City to begin a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Weill Cornell—a subspecialty that would give him the opportunity to maintain long relationships with patients who are living with chronic diseases that require close monitoring. Both his internal medicine and pulmonary care practices allow him to maintain enduring relationships with his patients, ensuring the kind of trust and communication so important for quality care.
Having spent 20 years taking care of critical care patients in medical and cardiothoracic intensive care units, Dr. Diaz cultivated a deep understanding of advanced diseases and their potential complications. This understanding enables him to counsel and treat his patients with the best forms of preventive medicine in the outpatient setting to keep them healthy and out of the hospital.
Part of his holistic approach to managing his patients’ health is using his training in Sleep Medicine to maximize the quality of life that comes from a good night’s sleep. In particular, Dr. Diaz focuses on the treatment of sleep deficiency and its effects on quality of life as well as cognitive and cardiopulmonary function.
Of course, Dr. Diaz relies on advanced diagnostic tools and clinically proven treatment plans, but the process of integrating his many specialties into one successful practice also requires careful listening and candid communication with patients, consultants, and patient families. He also believes that it’s his capacity to engage with each patient as a person in the community that makes his unique approach to delivering thorough care stand out.
Born in Medellin, Colombia, Dr. Diaz is completely bilingual. In his free time, he enjoys cooking for family and friends, international travel and reading good fiction.
