Dr. Hovis specializes in shoulders and knees. He performs a high volume of shoulder and knee surgeries every year. As an expert in arthroscopic, minimally-invasive surgery, his clinical focus is on rotator cuff repairs, shoulder instabilities and labral tears, ACL reconstructions, and cartilage restoration procedures.
Dr. Hovis performs MAKOplasty® robotic partial and total knee replacements and has completed the highest volume of MAKO partial knee replacements of any doctor in the region.
After graduating Cum Laude from Duke University with a bachelor of science degree, Dr. Hovis earned his medical degree with honors from Vanderbilt University in Nashville. He then went to Dallas, where he completed a general surgery internship at Parkland Memorial Hospital and an orthopedic residency with honors at the University of Texas-Southwestern.
Dr. Hovis continued his professional training with a sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Vail, Colorado. While there, he served as an assistant team physician for the Denver Broncos football team.
He went on to complete a traveling fellowship in shoulder surgery at the University of Zurich in Switzerland, where he performed reverse total shoulder replacements years before they were available in the United States.
While serving as a team physician for the US Alpine Ski Team, Dr. Hovis worked closely with the Olympic Committee. His research is published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including topics on sports medicine and treatments for knee and shoulder injuries.
Dr. Hovis is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery, and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. His local affiliations include the Tennessee Orthopaedic Association, the Tennessee Medical Association, and the Knoxville Academy of Medicine.

Dr. Hovis listened to what I had to say. He actually took his time to listen to his patient. He gave me his condolences. He had done surgery on my husband who has since passed. He was kind enough to get me a box of tissue seen him triggered some emotions from when I had been with my husband in the same office for the same surgery shoulder surgeries. He is very professional and shows empathy. He will definitely be doing both my bilateral Shoulder Surgeries

Dr. Hovis specializes in Sports Medicine and uses State of the Art Equipment for his surgeries and aftercare. For my Full Knee Replacement, Dr. Hovis used a pre-surgical CAT Scan to precisely measure my knee and what size prosthesis was needed. During surgery, Dr. Hovis used probs to further record my specific anatomical information into the Mako Robotic Assisted computer treatment plan. This guided Dr. Hovis and the Robot where to remove my arthritic bone quickly, efficiently, minimized blood loss, avoided healthy tendons and ligaments, was less invasive, which cut my recovery time. I was also sent home with a cordless, rechargeable PlasmaFlow device, which rhythmically, squeezes your calf to initially prevent blood clots after surgery. Ten days later, I used it on my surgical leg to push out inflammation and promote better, healing blood flow. That was a game changer! With excellent PT compliance, I’m was hitting golf balls and playing pickleball at 5 and 7 weeks!!!
He's the best! His bed side manner is top notch and he hears you when you share what is happening. I highly recommend Dr. Hovis!
Dr was great as usual, and a special shout out to Mike Hauge PT, who went over and above any expectations! Bryndals, not sure of her spelling, always helpful and the southern hospitality, i love the whole experience!
