Daniel B. Vanderbilt M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Daniel B. Vanderbilt M.D., Ph.D., grew up in Washington State, where he studied chemistry at Whitman College. Later he obtained his medical degree (M.D.) from West Virginia University, where he also completed a Ph.D. in Cancer Cell Biology. His doctoral dissertation focused on how signaling proteins in pancreatic cancer make the cancer cells more aggressive and resistant to treatment. Dr. Vanderbilt’s first year of residency (in general medicine) was in Morgantown, West Virginia. His residency training in Radiation Oncology was at Weill Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. While in residency, Dr. Vanderbilt was awarded a grant to study how to improve breast cancer screening. Additionally, he was a Holman Scholar, for which he studied how radiation interacts with gene expression in brain cancer.

After completing residency, Dr. Vanderbilt was a Radiation Oncology provider for MultiCare Health Systems in Washington State, treating all disease sites but with a particular focus on prostate, lung and breast cancers. He has authored peer-reviewed research on how breast and pancreatic cancer cells develop resistance to treatment and metastasize to distant sites. In clinical oncology research, he has published on the role of human papillomavirus in head and neck cancers, and studied how early intervention can improve outcomes of radiosurgery for brain metastases.

Dr. Vanderbilt enjoys hiking, skiing and playing piano.
