Dr. McDowell has been great both times I’ve seen him. Very straightforward, cut to the chase kind of guy. Assessed my injury, explained it thoroughly using the imaging, and answered all of my questions. Didn’t make me feel rushed at all. Only complaint is I was in the room for 30 mins even though I got brought back pretty quickly.

Very unprofessional. Me, my wife, and son went for a checkup involving issues with my sons knee. Doctor McDowell walked in the room and proceeded to berate and blame me for not contacting UNC oncologist while waiting for MRI results. I’m thinking to myself why would I contact them if I don’t know the results. I didn’t receive a call from his nurses for a month regarding the issue, so I’m thinking everything is fine. He then proceeded to tell us that my son had a cancerous lesion in his right knee, in front of my 13 year old son. After that, he then attacked again about not scheduling a follow on appointment after the MRI. When my son had an X ray, his nurses called with results, which expected the same. After he walked out, we proceeded to comfort our soon who began to cry and became very confused. He then said the MRI results was sent to UNC weeks ago and blamed them for not contacting us. I think his leadership should really have a talk with him to see what’s going on with him.

He has the poorest bedside manner. I’ve dealt with him before when my Grandmother fractured her left femur. He sent her home missing the fracture completely on the X-ray and the fact he wouldn’t listen…showed a lot. She walked around for two weeks with it broken and due to reasons that we are unaware of, he refused to send meds home with her for pain management. He did the same for me after my Primary Care Physician specifically told me I’d need surgery, he referred me to him and again, McDowell seemed very uninterested in my concerns and pain as well as sending me on my way shrugging off that my bone was completely broken in two. No meds for pain management and interrupted me every time I began to speak of concerns or ask questions. He lacks empathy, compassion, bedside manner and professionalism. I don’t care how “good” you are as a doctor or specialist, if you lack the above you’re worthless to the patient because they lack trust in you as a caregiver.

Rating not bc he couldn’t do anything for me, but bc of his non-caring and lazy attitude. He didn’t open the disc I brought until I asked if he had, and then it seemed like a chore. All the written notes from my former Pain Mgmnt-same thing. I was having a diverticulitis breakthrough at the same time (see MyChart for proof) and was in a lot of pain and he just did not care at all.

Dr. McDowell was very nice. He was knowledgeable about my fracture. He will also surgically repair my fracture. He was very clear on his explanation to me about what he will be doing and the stages I will have to go through to get walking again.
