As a general surgeon, Dr. Catherine Elizabeth Cahill, D.O., treats a diversity of patients — from those with a simple abscess to those with cancer — but focuses her practice on surgical treatment of the gallbladder, colon, and inguinal and abdominal hernias. She also performs all kinds of skin and soft tissue surgery, as well as post-surgical wound care.
Additionally, Dr. Cahill is board-certified in robotic surgery, which typically involves small incisions and less invasive techniques. These procedures can often make it possible for people to get back on their feet quicker for work, family, school, and other activities that matter to them.
This fits with Dr. Cahill’s overall approach to surgical treatment: to recommend care for her patients only as she would for a beloved family member. She strives to make each patient’s health care experience the best it can be.
Dr. Cahill earned her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and was chosen as the Wisely Surgical Resident of the Year during her residency at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. At the hospital where she practiced prior to joining Holy Redeemer, she was the youngest person and the only woman ever to be Chief of Surgery.
Dr. Cahill was drawn to medicine by visits to the hospital with her mother, a nurse who developed caring, influential relationships with her patients. During college, she worked in a pediatric clinic in the Bronx, where the physicians not only treated disease, but also educated whole families and engaged in outreach programs and wellness. Her experience there convinced her to go “all in” on medicine.
Today, what Dr. Cahill likes best about being a physician is the teamwork in the operating room, where everyone participates seamlessly in their role in order to have the best outcome for the patient. She especially loves the sense of patient-centered community at Redeemer Health.
As a physician and the mother of two young children, Dr. Cahill acknowledges she doesn’t have “a ton of free time,” but she enjoys family trips to the beach and trying new restaurants with her husband.
