Dr. Benjamin Thompson is a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon, with subspecialty fellowship training in arthroscopic surgery and the treatment of sports-related injuries. He joined Access Sports Medicine in 2014 after spending three years at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Milton, MA where he played an integral role in the development of an Orthopaedic Center of Excellence.
A New England native, Dr. Thompson attended Boston College High School and continued on to earn his Bachelor Degree in Clinical Psychology from Tufts University and a certificate from Harvard University in Pre-Medical Studies. He received his medical degree at Albany Medical College in 2004 where he graduated near the top of his class and won awards for excellence in Clinical Pathology.
Dr. Thompson performed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester. While in residency, he also completed a one-year musculoskeletal research fellowship. His team physician experience includes the Pawtucket Red Sox, the Lowell Spinners, the Pro Bull Riders tour and Worcester Polytechnical Institute football.
Following residency, Thompson completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at the Andrews Institute in Gulf Breeze, FL. As a fellow, Dr. Thompson worked side-by-side with world-renowned Orthopaedic Surgeons Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Lonnie Paulos. The fellowship provided Dr. Thompson with exposure to all aspects of nonoperative and operative musculoskeletal patient care. His team physician experience included coverage of the 2010 Division I National Champion Auburn University football team, the 2011 Division II National Champion University of West Florida baseball team as well as Escambia High School athletics.
When surgery is necessary, Dr. Thompson often utilizes minimally invasive, arthroscopic techniques. This approach reduces post-operative recovery time and allows an early return to work and play. Dr. Thompson’s surgical interests include arthroscopic and open treatment of knee, ankle, shoulder and elbow injuries, joint replacement surgery of the shoulder, fracture care and general orthopaedics. In addition, he holds certification in the treatment of cartilage injuries in the knee with articular cartilage implantation and repair.
Dr. Thompson has published several scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He was the recipient of the prestigious American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Herodicus Society Traveling Sports Medicine Fellowship for 2011-2012, an honor given to only two sports medicine physicians nationally each year. In 2015 he was awarded board certification in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
