Dr. Benjamin MacLennan is a fellowship-trained spine surgeon who specializes in cervical, thoracic, and lumbar adult degenerative spine conditions.
A native of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dr. MacLennan graduated summa cum laude from Binghamton University, The State University of New York, with his Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and then went on to complete his internship and residency training in orthopedic surgery in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Following his residency, Dr. MacLennan completed advanced spine surgery training during his fellowship in Seattle, Washington.
When he's not seeing patients, Dr. MacLennan enjoys hockey, golf, running, biking, swimming, and music.

Along with my experienced colleagues, I am able to help the majority of people with numerous nonsurgical treatment modalities. Surgery is reserved as the last treatment option. With adherence to proven surgical indications, this conservative approach leads to improved outcomes for patients.

I received information and steps to go forward. I appreciate his candidness.
A total disappointment. SUP-PAR care. He barely spent 3 minutes with me and wouldn't let me get a word in edgewise. He never showed me my x-rays or CAT scan or MRIs or explained to me ANYTHING about my back and my symptoms.. All he kept saying over and over again was you don't need surgery. All he said was take NSAIDS which I can't because I have heart failure and he said well I wouldn't operate on you anyway because you have heart failure I said I had a hip replacement in Iowa City only a year ago and I had no problems. He was rude and too fast and abrupt. Would definitely NOT recommend to anyone.
Bad attitude. Did nothing for my back pain. Dismissed my pain. Told me my two bulging disc was arthritis. He told me a bulging disc and arthritis was the same thing. Total waste of my 90 mile trip. .
Dr MacLennan is kind and thorough. I feel heard and that my questions and concerns are important during my appointments. I appreciate that he doesn’t jump right to surgery, but he also doesn’t let you live in pain when non-invasive options aren’t working. I’m thankful to have him as my spine specialist.
He was very nice and right to the point. He answered our questions patiently. I would return to him.
