Dr. Anthony Afong, M.D., is the medical director for the National Pain Institute and brings more than 20 years of experience to his work.
The opportunity to make a difference in the lives of patients by improving their functional mobility and quality of life first drew Dr. Afong to the field of pain management.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Florida and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed an internship focusing on internal medicine at the University of Utah and a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Texas.
Dr. Afong worked for five years in the pain management field and then finished an interventional pain management fellowship at the National Pain Institute where he has remained to work for every patient he sees.
He is driven by the opportunity to help patients in pain maximize their functional mobility and quality of life while utilizing minimally invasive procedures and limiting the use and dependence on medication.
When coordinating options, Dr. Afong believes patients “should take an active role in their treatment and care to facilitate and maximize their outcome,” he said.
