He attended the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where he earned his doctorate. His internal medicine residency was completed at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois. His general cardiology fellowship and invasive cardiology fellowship were completed at Loyola Heart and Vascular Center, where he was also named chief cardiology fellow.
