A native of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Dr. Heinzelmann grew up and attended high school in Fayetteville, Arkansas. His interest in medicine came in part from his father, who was an orthopaedic surgeon. Dr. Heinzelmann also credits being a student athlete and a desire to help other young athletes return to the field of play to his decision to become a physician. He finds helping people return from pain and injury to a normal lifestyle the most enjoyable aspect of practicing medicine.
He attended Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, and did graduate studies in microbiology at the University of Arkansas, where he received a Master of Science degree.
