Dr. Alfred E. Geissele, MD, FACS, FAAOS completed his orthopedic residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center after which he served as orthopedic surgeon and chief of orthopedics at Ft. Campbell, KY with the 101st Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group, and 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment. While at Ft. Campbell, he was deployed and served overseas. He was later sent by the Army to develop subspecialty expertise in spinal disorders at the University of Minnesota and the Twin Cities Scoliosis Spine Center in Minneapolis, where he completed the prestigious John H. Moe Fellowship. Following this, he served as assistant chief of orthopedics, orthopedic residency training director, and chief of spine surgery at Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Fort Gordon, Georgia (Augusta). Here he completed 15 years of military service before coming to Hickory in 1995.
Dr. Geissele is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spinal disorders in both children and adults. His areas of interest include back and neck pain, ruptured discs, fractures in the aging spine, spondylolisthesis, sacroiliac joint disorders, and scoliosis in children and adults, as well as minimally invasive surgery.
He is the only orthopaedist in the Unifour area to have qualified for Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Fellows are board certified surgeons whose education, training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct are reviewed and found to be consistent with the high standards of the ACS.
While in Hickory, Dr. Geissele developed a volunteer scoliosis screening program in conjunction with Frye Regional Medical Center, serving the greater Hickory area and Catawba county schools. In addition, he has participated in local volunteer efforts with the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and Cooperative Christian Ministries Clinic. He also served in the Pet Partners program at Frye Regional Medical Center.
After more than 25 years with EmergeOrtho, he is one of our most senior partners. During his tenure, he has provided leadership as a managing partner and group president for several years, as well as serving on numerous key hospital committees.
A physician for over 35 years, Dr. Geissele has practiced both clinical and academic medicine. He is the author or co-author of eight scholarly papers and has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings as well as throughout North Carolina.
He is an avid motorcycle enthusiast. When not practicing medicine, you will likely find him on his Harley Davidson. He also enjoys the outdoors, 4-wheeling, hunting, reading, and gardening as well as Hungarian food and culture. He and his wife, Marie, are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; their children and grandchildren live in Raleigh, Fort Mill, and Charleston.
