The career of Dr. Abdul-Razaq Adeniyi, M.D., FACC, as a cardiologist is the culmination of passion and compassion.
While studying biochemistry and molecular biology as an undergraduate, he found great satisfaction assisting refugees through nonprofit work. Medicine, he says, seemed like the perfect way to meld his love for science with his desire to help others.
Ironically, following his heart to medical school eventually led him to specialize in the organ itself. During his internal medicine residency, cardiology proved fascinating.
“I think being able to impact people in a truly dramatic way is probably the most rewarding thing about cardiology as a specialty,” Dr. Adeniyi says. “In my area of interventional cardiology and structural cardiology, I have the opportunity to do it in a wide variety of ways, and I’ve just fallen in love with that whole aspect of the field.”
His work ranges from practicing preventive cardiology as a way to help patients avert heart disease to performing complex procedures, caring for heart attack victims, treating valvular issues, and much more.
Cardiology allows Dr. Adeniyi the opportunity to build relationships with his patients over time as well as foster strong connections with those in emergency situations.
One such experience that took place early in his career continues to have a profound effect on him today. Dr. Adeniyi was treating a critically ill mother in her 40s, who had complex cardiac issues. Not only was the patient’s mortality at stake, but so was the well-being of her children. In the end, Dr. Adeniyi and his team were able to work toward a successful outcome and save the patient’s life.
“That’s always impressed on me the importance of having adequate skills and making the right decisions when treating patients, particularly those who are critically ill,” he says. “And that’s what pushes me to really try and maintain the highest level of expertise in all the subspecialty areas of cardiology that I practice.”
Dr. Adeniyi continues his tradition of practicing compassion outside of the workplace through volunteering and sharing his medical expertise with Savannah’s refugee community.
At home, Dr. Adeniyi enjoys spending time with his wife, visiting his family, and playing soccer and flag football.
